What is Xylitol?
Birkengold® Xylitol is a sweetener made from natural vegetable raw materials. It looks, tastes and sweetens just like sugar. Numerous studies proved its positive properties for teeth and gums. Xylitol is especially popular with diabetics because it has hardly any effect on the blood sugar level.
Our traditional Birkengold® Xylitol consists of pure European xylitol, obtained from the nutritious birch and beech bark fibres. We now also offer Organic Xylitol made of plant fibres from organically grown corn.
Xylitol naturally occurs not only in birch and beech bark but also in many fruits and vegetables. The human body synthesises daily about 10 grams of xylitol in the liver.
Birkengold® Xylitol is eminently suitable for baking, sweetening drinks, for making jams and desserts. In recipes, the sugar just needs to be replaced by the same quantity of xylitol.
History of Xylitol in Europe
Xylitol (also known as birch sugar) was discovered already in the end of the 19th century. It became popular during World War II when it was used as a sugar substitute in Scandinavia because of sugar shortage. The big benefits of xylitol became recognized through the Turku sugar studies, which had proven the positive effects of “birch sugar” on dental health. Gradually many further positive properties of xylitol have been discovered by now. Here you can read more about the benefits of xylitol.
Important Information Concerning Pets
Keep Xylitol away from your pets. Xylitol (similar to many other foods like chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, etc.) is not suitable for dogs and other pets as they metabolise it in a different way than humans.
Should your pet have eaten xylitol (even small quantities) please seek medical advice immediately.
